Chess is believed to have originated in India around the 6th century as a game called Chaturanga. It spread to Persia, where it became known as Shatranj and developed new rules. After the Islamic conquests, the game moved across the Middle East and into Europe. In medieval Europe, the rules evolved—especially the powerful movements of the queen and bishop. By the 15th century, it had become the modern game of chess played worldwide today.
